Snowpals is giving away eight Squaw Valley USA & Alpine Meadows Lift Tickets, one lift ticket given away every Sunday starting on Sunday November 11, 2012. The final Sunday lift ticket giveaway will be on Sunday December 30, 2012.
For eight Sundays until the end of 2012, we’ll pick a winner from those who’ve entered the giveaway before 11:55 PM (PST); we’ll post the name of the lucky winner to Snowpals page and here:
Week 1 – Sunday Nov 11: Congrats Vicki O
“While I love Kirkwood for the snow and the people and the scenic splendor, it can take hours to get there from SF if the one-lane Hwy 88 roads are icy. I also like Sierra-at-Tahoe: lots of trail, tree and off-piste skiing options; hi-speed lifts and designed to get around easily; 3 on-mountain hubs; good mogul runs and a relaxed vibe. Yet, it’s gotta be Squaw for me! My absolute favorite is also the most expensive, but for good reason. Squaw is huge with 3 on-mountain hubs catering to a wide range of apres-ski activities and appetites; unbeatable variety of terrain for beginners to experts alike; well-designed resort for vista eye-candy and flow of riders w/different destinations in mind; and the people are great! … an international crowd; amazing riders doing crazy stuff everywhere you look! And if you like great food and drinks there are many choice scenes (I like PlumpJack, myself). Downsides? Yes, the crowds; the $$$; the weekend lift line waiting … mais, c’est la vie.”
Week 2 Winners– Sunday Nov 18: we’re feeling generous this Monday 11/19; we’re actually breaking some rules here: we are giving away TWO Squaw/Alpine lift tickets for this one Sunday – one goes to
Cat D. ‘I don’t know Tahoe well, but I like a down home atmosphere, a warm fire, a great selection of microbrews on tap, or a cup of rich hot chocolate and good company.”
and the other free lift ticket goes to:
Jim D. ” The Tourist Club in Truckee for cheap drinks in a locals dive bar, nice change of pace from the “trendy” scene.”
Week 3 winner: Congrats to Chris C for winning a Squaw/Alpine lift ticket on SUN 11/25 giveaway – “I usually prefer to drive all the way… but… Woodstock pizza just south of Sacramento is pretty yummy.”
Week 4 winner:SUN 12/2 winner is Lilly K. – “My favorite is Lone Eagle Grille because of the views and ambiance!” – Congrats Lilly!
Week 5: Congrats to Alvin C. – our winner for 12/9 “Shirley Lake Squaw Valley. But love going back to base starting with Funitel.”
Week 6: 12/16 winner is Andrea M-J, “The hills were alive with the sound of music…and I didn’t have my iPod turned on. I could hear John Phillips Sousa reverberating through the trees and shaking the snow. I changed course and headed to the other side of Kirkwood to see what the hullabaloo was about. And then I saw it…a full marching band playing their instruments WHILE skiing down the mountain. The sun reflected off the trumpets while the tuba player had to bend over to resist the drag of filling his horn with air. They were on snowboards and skis with every instrument represented and they rocked that mountain. My goose bumps had nothing to do with the weather!”
Week 7: Congrats to Mark T. -“Time to get busy on the slopes so I usually just pack some energy bars and a hydration pack and I am good to go. Its all about that huge continental breakfast and huge day slicing up the slopes and find any pub with hand crafted beers and a monster plate of Nachos. Go solo or go with 4 your best buds. More time on slopes going hard and plenty of time to party or just relax in all that enjoyment later.”
Week 8: Congrats to Madison W, our SUN DEC 30 Squaw/Alpine lift ticket giveaway lucky person. Thanks everyone for sharing.
2) Those who didn’t win last week, please re-enter the contest to win for SUN 12/30. To enter the contest, please share with us on our facebook photo timeline what your first ski/ride day in Tahoe was like this season.. bonus points for sharing a link to video or photo of you enjoying the POW.

Powderwhore Ski movie: Choose Your Adventure – Despite the underwhelming winter of 2011-12, in which snowfall reached near record lows and unstable avalanche conditions, the Powderwhores were able to make the most of the conditions at home and abroad, with trips to Cerro Castillo, Chile; La Grave, France; the Antarctic Peninsula; Svalbard, Norway; Mount Foraker, Alaska; British Columbia, Canada, and the Wasatch Mountains in Utah. The film features an array of characters from salty backcountry veterans to some of the top skiers and snowboarders, including Chris Davenport, Jake Sakson, Andrew McLean, Seth Wescott, Dylan Freed, Noah Howell, Matt Reardon, Drew Stoecklein, Forrest Coots, Ian Provo, Neil Provo, Chuck Mumford, Darrell Finlayson, Bob Athey, PY Leblanc, Jason Thompson,Todd Stuart and Hugo Harrison.”Remember the classic Choose Your Own Adventure books? We are playing with that theme for delivering this ski odyssey.” says Powderwhore athlete and founder Noah Howell. “Our interest lies in finding exotic locations and people with real stories and objectives. We wanted to tag along and capture their actions and motivation for heading into the mountains. It’s more of an authentic experience this way. Instead of a staged video shoot we arranged, we traveled light and moved fast to avoid interfering with the actual adventures unfolding.”Chris Davenport joined the filming while on a boat on the Antarctic Peninsula. “I have had the opportunity to ski on the Antarctic Peninsula three times and it has quickly become one of my favorite places in the world for ski mountaineering,” Davenport says. “I love life on the boat, and the easy access to incredible ski terrain make it hard to beat. Throw in the amazing wildlife and gorgeous ocean views and you have a location second-to-none for the new film ‘Choose Your Adventure.’In the end, this is a feature-length ski film that celebrates exotic locations, wild adventures, and the dedicated personalities writing their own stories in snow.Proceeds benefit Snowlands Network.

An independent memoir written, directed and produced by an American who worked in Ma’s comany for eight years, Crocodile in the Yangtze captures the emotional ups and downs of life in a Chinese Internet startup at a time when the Internet brought China face-to-face with the West.
Crocodile in the Yangtze draws on 200 hours of archival footage filmed by over 35 sources between 1995 and 2009. The film presents a strikingly candid portrait of Ma and his company, told from the point of view of an “”American fly on a Chinese wall”” who witnessed the successes and the mistakes Alibaba encountered as it grew from a small apartment into a global company employing more than 16,000 staff.”
