Got backcountry skiing, snowboarding avalanche safety classes + Tahoe area backcountry topo map?

With abundant snow for Lake Tahoe area and Sierra Nevada, if you’ve been wanting to get into backcountry skiing and riding, this is the season to get started, sign up for a backcountry avalanche awareness and safety class/course aka AIARE level courses from certified instructors from the American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education – view class offerings.

Get the Inside Scoop, Purchase a Lake Tahoe Backcountry Ski Topographic Map and Guidebook – use snowpals19 promo discount coupon code to get 10% off at https://backcountryskimaps.com/product/tahoe-southwest

You’re in Tahoe, the stoke is high, the conditions are perfect…
…and you’re stuck waiting in a lift line to ski groomers and bumps because you couldn’t find a local with the beta you needed to get into the backcountry.

Backcountry Ski Maps wants to make this scenario a thing of the past.

Tahoe backcountry map was specifically designed as a topographic map and guidebook rolled into one to make it easier to find all the information you need to get out touring in the Tahoe area.

All maps include detailed ascent and descent routes, photos, and a text guide to the best lines, which means that just one source of beta can easily get you to secret stashes you had only heard ‘whispers of’. We highlight the most classic lines, help you find the easiest approaches, and reveal the biggest potential dangers and challenges so you can spend less time searching for information and more time skiing!

The Tahoe Southwest Map features more than 70 descents, ranging from mellow glades to ultra-steep couloirs. For more details, to purchase, go to https://backcountryskimaps.com/product/tahoe-southwest

For Apres ski & ride, what’s a good place to hang out to enjoy drinks / share good eats for happy hour?

aleworx-tahoe-happy-hour

Tahoe Aleworx in South Lake Tahoe is among the best for beer + pizza; happy hour is Monday to Friday, 3pm to 6pm with $12 pizzas (which is $6 off) and selected draft beer are $5 a pint.

You can’t beat RFID wristbands to pour your own beer 🙂

They have 2 locations in South Lake Tahoe (Stateline near Heavenly Village and at the “Y”).

https://www.yelp.com/biz/lake-tahoe-aleworx-stateline-stateline

If you only have time for one craft beer pub – this is it! It has everything you want and more…

– a tremendous selection of more than 20 brews, including many from other top craft breweries in northern & central California rotating regularly. Also on tap are a few wines and ciders.
– gourmet personal pizzas and other items are delicious.
– a huge patio with firepits, corn hole, and live music overlooking the forest!
– beautifully decorated interior with all recycled woods on the walls and tables all from barns & other reclaimed woods, unique rustic custom lighting, and for the men visiting the restroom is a must – the first “beerinal” I have ever seen.
– no waiting in line or for servers to order more beer – it’s computer linked to your credit card so you just pour at will after initial check in.
– Happy Hour prices are a steal – e.g. world class gourmet specialty pizzas for $12! Beers very discounted too.
– excellent customer service!

Of the 100+ craft beer bars/breweries my son and I have been to, no other does it all so well!” – Andrew J.

About Sierra-at-Tahoe

Brothers Ray and Floyd Barrett successfully opened ski operations in 1946 when they cranked up the bullwheel at what was then known as Sierra Ski Ranch. A few years later in 1953, long-time local Vern Sprock purchased Sierra Ski Ranch. The Sprock family was successful in operating the resort until 1993 when the resort was sold to Fibreboard and the resorts name changed from Sierra Ski Ranch to Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort.

The “Ranch,” as it was then known to skiers all over the area, was located further down Highway 50. The ski resort was moved to its present location in 1968, when the California Department of Transportation began widening Highway 50.

Over time, Sierra-at-Tahoe has grown to be one of Lake Tahoe’s largest ski resorts with over 2,000 skiable acres, serviced by ten chairlifts, including three express quads. In July 1993 new owner Fibreboard brought many changes to Sierra Ski Ranch including the new name – Sierra-at-Tahoe. Fibreboard also brought several innovative programs and guest focused services to Sierra.

Booth Creek Ski Holdings’ purchase of the resort in 1996 continued to fuel additional industry firsts for Sierra. Sierra has a long reputation of legendary terrain, excellent location and great value. Sierra’s strategy of being “Lake Tahoe’s Full Service, Value Oriented Day Use Snowsports Resort,” is continually emphasized by providing great service, great value, big fun and a commitment to innovation. Sierra strives to provide the level of service that our guests go home talking about and come back expecting.

The Truckee Ranger District on the Tahoe National Forest houses and runs the avalanche forecasting operations of the avalanche center. It houses three full-time, seasonal avalanche forecasters and provides infrastructure including office space, computers, internet access, phones, vehicles, fuel, safety equipment, and supervision. The forecasters gather avalanche, snowpack, and weather observations then use this data to create and issue avalanche advisories and avalanche warnings.

The 501(c)(3) not for profit organization known as Sierra Avalanche Center is focused on educational and safety programs to support winter recreation and fundraising to support the financial needs of the program. It consists of a volunteer Board of Directors, a volunteer Advisory Panel to the Board of Directors, and a paid Executive Director to run programs and operations. Through its fundraising efforts this group provides two thirds of the funding necessary to cover budget expenses and operations. Other expenses paid for by the not for profit include the costs of continuing education and some of the cost of the equipment necessary for the forecasters to operate safely in the field. The not for profit also funds sub contracted field observers to collect additional information for avalanche, snowpack, and weather data. Fundraising for these expenses is accomplished through the organization of the SAC Ski Day fundraisers, by securing sponsorships and grants, as well as by gathering private donations and conducting a membership drive for user support. Additionally, the Board of Directors works jointly with the Tahoe National Forest to make decisions regarding the future direction of the avalanche center that are acceptable to both parties.

Mission Statement
Sierra Avalanche Center’s mission is to inform and educate the public about backcountry avalanche conditions in the greater Lake Tahoe area.
