Benefits of a ski lease

benefits of joining a ski lease

Benefits of a ski lease:

  • You have your own Tahoe vacation home for the entire ski season.
  • Convenience of being able to leave all personal belongings and ski gear instead of packing and repacking for every trip.
  • Peace of mind knowing you have a place to stay for weekends and holidays when hotel rates are expensive. Having a ski lease saves you (1) money over the long term and (2) the hassle of booking hotel and lodging during popular periods such as holidays.
  • A great perk with the ability to invite guests and entertain in your own ski lease home.
  • Save money by being able to BBQ or cook your own meals.
  • Sleep in your own bed and have the ability to do laundry.

Do you have a season pass or plan to buy one? Would you like to put your season pass to maximum use by logging as many days as you can? Consider joining a ski lease for lodging convenience and save money over the long run.

Let’s say the average ski lease membership costs about $1,200 for five months, from Dec. 1 to April 30. Let’s say you ski/ride for three weekends a month(or 6 days a month) or a total of 30 days for the season; the cost would break down to $40 per day. That’s inexpensive(a great value) compared to weekend hotel rates in Lake Tahoe which typically cost $80 or more on the weekends and significantly more expensive on holiday weekends. It’s easy to find out whether joining a ski lease is viable or not by figuring out how many total days you plan to ski/ride over the entire season; using that number to divide by the cost of joining the ski lease which will give you a per day cost.

In addition, becoming a member of a ski lease is a great way to expand your social circle, meet people to ski/ride with, share transportation expenses to Tahoe and make new friends.

Read our ski lease guide for some useful tips and advice on organizing a ski lease.

Tahoe weekend getaway: colorful Autumn drives & events

alpine county fall color lake tahoe fall colors

When’s the best time to see the color of fall foliage around Tahoe?

You don’t have to live on the East Coast to enjoy Autumn’s foliage colors. Plan a Tahoe weekend getaway to feast your eyes on the fiesta of fall color happening from the end of September through October when the color changes are most dramatic. Mid-October is usually at the peak of fall foliage for a temperate fall season where the change in temperature is gradual and when the weather pattern eases into winter. If, however, there is a sudden cold front or an early snow, fall leaves can depart the trees practically overnight. 2012 fall season is looking to be mild so far as of September 19, 2012.

Around Lake Tahoe, aspens are the main trees displaying the mountains with a mix of gold and orange. Other trees changing foliage colors: big leaf maple (the first to change, between 3,000 and 4,000 feet in elevation is dressed in bright yellow) dogwood (5,000′, dogwood are pink and green), and black oak(tinged with orange leaves).

Scenic Lake Tahoe drives & points of interest:

  • Drive up the Mt. Rose Scenic Byway
  • Drive around Lake Tahoe south on Highway 28 on the Nevada side
  • Spooner Lake is a good scenic place for an easy walk through the trees around the lake.
  • Marlette Lake offers excellent intermediate hiking; providing several miles of golden aspens.
  • Drive on US 50, from Zephyr Cove to Stateline and South Lake Tahoe, fall color cascades from the mountain slopes down to Lake Tahoe shores.
  • Hope Valley, south of Lake Tahoe, is one of the best vibrant aspen color showing around. Hope Valley draws photographers galore seeking to capture the essence fall color display.
  • If you’d like to be at the center of it all, immerse yourself in the vibrant colors of fall by visiting the city of Markleeville(also known as the Alpine County seat). Plan a weekend getaway to go hiking, biking, camping and enjoy a relaxing soak in the hot spring pool at Grove Hot Springs State Park. Make your plans soon because the colors of Autumn might be here today and gone tomorrow. Before you know it, snowflakes will be fluttering to earth blanketing landscapes white.
Tahoe’s Autumn Notable Events:
  • Oktoberfest at the Village at Squaw Valley on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012 starting at 11:00 am (enjoy Bratwurst,  excellent German beers, free entertainment & live music).
  • The 3rd Annual Lake Tahoe Restaurant Week, October 7-14, 2012, gives foodies an opportunity to enjoy 3-course, prix-fixe menus for lunches and dinners at 25+ participating restaurants throughout the Lake Tahoe region for $20, $30 or $40 per person. “The Tahoe Restaurant Week is a celebration of the scrumptious cuisine and culinary talent that has made the Lake Tahoe region the best mountain dining destination in the country. Delight your palate with menus that incorporate organic, seasonal and local ingredients – all served up at Lake Tahoe’s charming and historic eateries and bistros.”  – View a list of participating Tahoe Restaurants.

Tips:

  1. Call hotels in the area you’d like to visit and inquire to see if Autumn foliage colors are at their peak before making a visit.
  2. Keep tabs on California locations with the most dramatic fall color changes by visiting California Fall Color.

Attending the Fleet Week Tips: start early and make it a day. Get there before 10 am otherwise you will probably run into both heavy traffic and parking difficulty.

  1. A good strategy is usually to park a distance away from the crowds and walk, bike in or take public transit(in addition to being less expensive, it is much easier to escape when, later in the day, traffic snarls develop).
  2. Generally, when visiting San Francisco, dress in layers(bring along a light jacket/wind breaker). The climate is usually moderate but if you move around there will always be places where you will be too hot or too cold depending on the sun, wind, fog, and time of day.

Outstanding Entrepreneurial Films in the Spotlight:

+ Crocodile in the Yangtze (The amazing story of Jack Ma building Alibaba.com vs Ebay – A must see for every tech entrepreneur to re-energize their spirit and belief, this is not another ‘Social Network’.

“Crocodile in the Yangtze follows China’s first Internet entrepreneur and former English teacher, Jack Ma, as he battles US giant eBay on the way to building China’s first global Internet company, Alibaba Group. An independent memoir written, directed and produced by an American who worked in Ma’s comany for eight years, Crocodile in the Yangtze captures the emotional ups and downs of life in a Chinese Internet startup at a time when the Internet brought China face-to-face with the West.
Crocodile in the Yangtze draws on 200 hours of archival footage filmed by over 35 sources between 1995 and 2009. The film presents a strikingly candid portrait of Ma and his company, told from the point of view of an “”American fly on a Chinese wall”” who witnessed the successes and the mistakes Alibaba encountered as it grew from a small apartment into a global company employing more than 16,000 staff.”

+ Uprising (The Facebook revolution that changed a whole Country of Egypt – A must see what Social Network is really worth and see how it impacts our lives).

UPRISING tells the inside story of the Egyptian revolution from the perspective of its principal leaders and organizers. Featuring major figures including four Nobel Peace Prize nominees, several Egyptian presidential candidates, the former foreign ministers of Egypt and Jordan, and former US Ambassadors and White House officials, along with never before seen footage, UPRISING provides the authoritative behind-the scenes view of one of the most dramatic events of our generation.

+ Traveling Salesman ( An algorithm that could solve itself; does one exists?). Travelling Salesman is an intellectual thriller about four mathematicians hired by the U.S. government to solve the most elusive and powerful problem in computer science history — P VS. NP. The four have jointly created a “system” which could be the next major advancement for our civilization or destroy the fabric of humanity.

Who we are:

We met in LA while working as engineers designing aircraft and satellites. We started this product about a year ago coming back from a trip to the lake after realizing that we all cautiously stowed our iPhones in ziploc bags. We wanted to use our iPhones to record outdoor video, but found that nothing existed to address our need. We siezed the opportunity to design something our friends would be excited to use.

Paul: Paul is a surfer, skier and mountain biker who spent college winters in Tahoe and now builds telescopes. Paul is responsible for the optics and web development.

Tim: Tim is a snowboarder and volleyball player who has been controlling vibration on aircraft and spacecraft for the last 6 years. Tim is responsible for app development.

Zoltan: Zoltan is a mountain biker and snowboarder who was making flight control systems for 6 years before going to USC to get his MBA. In his spare time, he volunteers with FIRST (high school robotics) team 1197. Zoltan is responsible for mechanical design.

Alex: Alex is a surfer, snowboarder and volleyball player who worked as a materials engineer in semiconductor manufacturing before going back to school at UCLA. He is one of the founders and now serves as an advisor to the team.

Where we are now and how we will close with the Kickstarter pre-sales:

We’ve designed, prototyped, and then redesigned the case and mount over and over. We’ve performed a lot of analysis to ensure it works well and can stand up to abuse. We’ve been using the product and improved on all the things you only discover after testing something in the real world.

Yes, we did the analysis
Yes, we did the analysis

We met with our manufacturing partners and inspected their factories. We collaborated with them on the design to ensure that it is producible and affordable. We developed the app, designed and manufactured samples of our custom lenses, and completed our 3D printed mounts. The time has come to build injection molding tooling for manufacturing the production run of the case.

This is where you come in: The Kickstarter funds are dedicated entirely to tooling and material for the production run. We specified the highest grade of tooling for the best surface finish and part consistency. We’ve taken the project this far, now it is up to you to help us bring this project from prototype to production.

So if you are ready to start getting great video from some creative angles, lock in your pre-order now. You know Kickstarter is all or nothing so tell your friends about iconic.am and share it on Facebook, every contribution level helps.

Manufacturing Plan

  • schedule starts after funds are processed (typically 2 weeks)
  • Week 1: place orders for injection molding tooling, place order for die casting tooling, place lens order, place die cut material order
  • Week 2-3: set up assembly tooling with rapid prototyped parts, die cut components (screens, acoustic pass-throughs, sticky pads) arrive
  • Week 4-5: injection molding tooling finished, proved out, prove-out units assembled, prove-out units tested for IP rating (waterproofness)
  • Week 6: production units begin assembly
  • Week 7: production units begin shipping
Thanks for all the support!

RISKS AND CHALLENGES

LEARN ABOUT ACCOUNTABILITY ON KICKSTARTER

-Optics Accuracy: We have a preferred vendor that we chose based on their technical capabilities rather than price. We bought and tested lenses to our final specification from them.

-Injection Molding Tooling Producibility: Our vendor has provided quotes based on final CAD models, but there will almost certainly be details that need to be worked out. We plan to mitigate risk by being co-located with our vendor during the detail design phase of the tooling and initial production.

-Case Waterproofness: We performed all of our testing with rapid prototyped parts. They are not as waterproof (because they’re porous) as the final injection molded parts will be. We dunked our iPhones with these prototypes plenty of times, but our waterproofness rating tests need to be performed on production parts. This presents a schedule risk that we will mitigate by testing design elements in mock-ups. For example: a tube machined to look like the optics portion of the housing assembled with real optics, o-ring, and retainer to test that seal. We are working with a vendor that produces IP rated sealed electronics and incorporated their recommendations into the design of the iconic.am case.

Our Risk Mitigation Qualifications:
In our day jobs, we design components and systems and manage suppliers to deliver them. Our “portfolio” includes work on the Airbus A350XWB airliner, the F-35C Joint Strike Fighter, James Webb Space Telescope and others.
