Snowshoeing is fun, easy and an inexpensive way to get out on the snow around Lake Tahoe to enjoy the great outdoors and partake in nature photography.
How to snowshoe?
Simply attach a pair of snowshoes to your waterproof hiking boots, and you are ready to go. It’s easy; if you can walk, you can snowshoe.
Where to rent or buy snowshoes?
For first timers, rent a pair of snowshoes at REI to try out snowshoeing. If you plan to go often, buy snowshoes at REI’s clearance deals (a quality pair of snowshoes will last you many years) or other sporting goods. Snowshoes are lightweight, easy to put on, and come with claws on the bottom for added hiking traction up and down hills.
Snowshoeing over packed snow is similar to hiking with large feet, but hiking through deep, fresh powder can be a good workout.
What to wear?
Dress in layers with the outer most layer being a waterproof jacket so you can peel off a layer when you warmed up; wear sweat wicking inner shirt, lightweight waterproof gloves, a hat/beanie, and also remember to pack sunglasses, sunblock lotion, water and a snack or lunch. Also bring ski poles to use which will help with stability/balance when trekking up and down hills.
Where to snowshoe in Tahoe? Flume Trail
My favorite spot for snowshoeing where you can enjoy panoramic views of Lake Tahoe is the Flume Trail. The Flume Trail is a 12.9 mile point-to-point trail located near Incline Village, Nevada. A great spot for picnicking is about 1 mile walk in where you can experienced beautiful panoramic views of the lake. Pack and enjoy a picnic lunch while taking in panoramic views of Lake Tahoe. If you are taking your date or significant other, this is as romantic and scenic as you can get for a Tahoe outing. In the off season, mountain biking the Flume trail is a popular activity.
The Flume trailhead starts right behind the Tunnel Creek Cafe at 1115 Tunnel Creek Rd, Incline Village, NV 89451. Follow the blacktop road behind the cafe to the trailhead’s gate. If you eat or buy a drink at the cafe, you can ask to park at the cafe parking free of charge. Otherwise, park across the street for free.
Look for hotels and lodging deals in the vicinity of Incline Village, NV, Kings Beach, Tahoe City, or Crystal Bay. For first time booking, get $25 off Tahoe area hotels.
Good value breakfast deal can be had at the Tahoe Biltmore Lodge, Restaurant, Casino: Bilty’s breakfast goes for $6.25 (served 7 AM to 11 AM) is the best deal which includes three eggs any style with bacon, sausage or ham. Eggs cooked just the way you like, accompanied by hash brown potatoes and your choice of toast. Or stop by on Sundays for their $9.95 all you can eat brunch! After snowshoeing, enjoy Happy Hour 7 days a week 3pm-7pm with $1 Draft Beer $2 Well, $2 Jager shots, and $4 Patron Shots.

So you still haven’t bought your ski season pass yet and can’t quite decide on what’s the best pass to buy for a multi-resort pass packed with value to price ratio? ..
Here are some important factors and questions to determine which pass will give you the best value for the price aka “best bang for the buck”:
how many days do you plan to ski/ride this season?
how many resorts/mountains would you like to have access to?
is it required that you have no blackout days meaning holidays must be
included(note that holidays tend to be crowded slope-side, services sub-par/long wait times, and high traffic getting to and from the resort)?
would you like to have access to resorts across multiple States in the US plus international ski resorts access?
how many days would you need to use the pass for it to pay for itself?
Once you’ve had a chance to answer the questions above, you’ll be in a better position to decide which ski/ride season pass is the best value for you. Naturally, if you grew up skiing or riding at a particular resort, you’ll likely have a loyal tendency to favorite that resort but let’s say we set that aside and let’s just talk shop in terms of determining the best value season pass.
Ok, so we’ve crunched the numbers for you and ran a comparison of all the available 2016-17 multiple mountain ski season passes, our findings point to the Epic Pass as a great value for a multi-mountain pass and here’s why:
“Ski as much as you want, whenever you want.” – Vail Resorts..
Unlimited access to:
Vail
Beaver Creek
Breckenridge
Keystone
Park City
Heavenly
Northstar
Kirkwood
Wilmot
Afton Alps
Mt. Brighton
Perisher (2017 access)
Arapahoe Basin
International Access:
What drew us in to the Epic Pass is the bonus inclusion of 5 lift tickets to Whistler Blackcomb which is rated #1 for the 2016-17 winter season by Ski Magazine, named “Top Overall Ski Resort”. Not sure about you, but Whistler Blackcomb is on our MUST DO LIST for it’s vast terrain and super fun apres ski and nightlife. 😉 – Read more about Whistler Blackcomb’s terrain and nightlife .
In addition, the Epic Pass includes access to 30 European resorts across Austria, France, Italy, and Switzerland! Access now includes four of Europe’s most iconic destinations. France’s largest ski areas, Les 3 Vallees, Paradiski and Tignes-Val D’Isere offer a unique playground to skiers and snowboarders from all over the world, accessing five glaciers, 391 ski lifts and over 800 miles of marked runs for all ability levels within a 30-mile radius. The three areas combine high-altitude skiing guaranteeing quality snow from November to May with stunning view of Mont Blanc and a 360-degree panorama of the French, Swiss and Italian Alps.
South of the Alps, nestled amongst some of the most beautiful mountain peaks in the world such as Brenta Dolomites and Adamello (11,666 feet), is some of the best skiing in Italy. Skirama Dolomiti Adamello Brenta is home to 150 lifts and 236 miles of ski slopes that that make up acclaimed resorts such as Madonna di Campiglio and Pinzolo in Val Rendena; Folgarida-Marilleva, Peio and Tonale in Val di Sole; Ponte di Legno, Andalo-Fai della Paganella, Monte Bondone and Folgaria-Lavarone. The winter offering is enriched by the high-quality cuisine and the exclusive “Italian style.”
Verbier, part of the 4 Vallees ski area, is the largest resort in the Swiss Alps, is acknowledged as one of the premier “off piste” resorts in the world, and is home to a number of professional freeride competitions. Above and beyond this reputation, Verbier is well-known internationally for its electrifying, cosmopolitan nightlife, and the resort is proud of its legendary après-ski and its lively clubs. While skiers and snowboarders from all over the world rave about this off-piste paradise and fun evenings, families also appreciate the resort’s social atmosphere and family-friendly offerings.
For decades, the mountain range between Tyrol and Vorarlberg, which is home to Arlberg, has been a highly sought-after metropolis for international ski and snowboard enthusiasts. Arlberg is widely considered the cradle of modern skiing and in December 2016, thanks to the opening of four new chair lifts, it will be Austria’s largest linked ski area. Also the birthplace of champions, athletes from Ski Club Arlberg have garnered an incredible 83 medals at various Olympic Games and World Championships.
“For value, for ease of use, for access to world-class destinations, for constant improvements in the guest experience, and now for being the only pass to offer significant access to Europe, the Epic Pass is in a class by itself,” Kirsten Lynch, chief marketing officer of Vail Resorts.

About the movie:
It’s been 67 years since ski-film pioneer Warren Miller picked up a camera to capture the wonder, the adventure, the humor and the beauty that is skiing. Since that time, Warren Miller film crews have traveled the globe—from storied slopes to hidden, snow-covered corners—to celebrate all things snowsports. Their quest has taken powder-hungry filmgoers, well, Here, There & Everywhere—and this year continues that legacy.
In this 67th annual Warren Miller film, take a freeski adventure with industry veterans Ingrid Backstrom and Wendy Fisher in Crested Butte, tour Eastern Greenland by dog sled with Seth Wescott and Rob Kingwill and follow Jess McMillan and Grete Eliassen on a Swiss holiday aboard the Glacier Express. Explore the backcountry of Western Montana’s Glacier Country with Tyler Ceccanti, Collin Collins and Keith Curtis and catch a powder day with Kaylin Richardson, Matt Elliott, Marcus Caston and the Kicking Horse ski patrol in British Columbia.
Travel along as Warren Miller Entertainment commemorates Stein Eriksen in Deer Valley, captures the big air at Boston’s Fenway Park (yes, that Fenway Park!) and rides the steeps of Squaw Valley to the big lines of Cordova, Alaska, plus much more. This year, don’t miss original ski bum and filmmaker Warren Miller himself in on-screen interviews as he spins tales of the past as only Warren can do, reminding us that through the years, these films have truly taken audiences Here, There & Everywhere.
Sponsors of the 2016 Warren Miller Film Tour include: Western Montana’s Glacier Country, Gosling’s, L.L. Bean, Moosehead, Switzerland Tourism, Helly Hansen, Korbel and SKI Magazine.

Snowfest is coming! Get bundled up and ready to kick off Spring!
The Space Cowboys of San Francisco are beginning the festivities with some funky breakbeats on the patio of the KT Olympic Deck at Squaw Valley on March 1st at 1pm. Check out some of their music and djs here https://soundcloud.com/spacecowboys or hit up their main website to see where they’ll be bringing beats to Snowfest with their infamous UNIMOG. (The UNIMOG is fully equipped with sound, lights, and ready to provide a bass pumping party at a moment’s notice.) Don’t fret if you wander off from the party with friends, you can come back for more in the evening. The Space Cowboys will be hosting an after-party at the Olympic Plaza Bar, and you can catch them the following night at Lakeside in Tahoe City.
Then head over to Mamasake in the Squaw Valley Village for the Extreme Food Challenge they are hosting from 4-6pm. Heck, why not enter? Mamasake is also featuring happy hour hand rolls from 3-5pm.
If you want to keep dancing, Crystal Bay Casino has a free concert in their Crown Room Friday March 1st at 10pm featuring Dehli 2 Dublin, a live electronic band, with an after party featuring Izzy Wise (SF) and local bass music artist Benjah Ninjah. Here is what the BBC had to say about Dehli 2 Dublin: “The Vancouver-based collective combines dhol, fiddle and breakbeats in an Irish/Asian stew that is surprisingly varied, a marvellously wide-ranging and free-thinking concept.”
This is just a sample of what is going down for the opening daze of Snowfest! Check out the full calendar of events here and decide for yourself which are most worth catching. Snowfest events are ongoing from March 1st through March 10th.
Sunday, March 3rd check out the Duncan Golf Dog Pull in Tahoe City, followed by a Luau at Sunnyside on the West Shore. If you would like to register your dog in the dog pull, you’ll need to arrive an hour early and the cost of registration is $10. Show up at 11am to the Tahoe City Winter Sports Park/Tahoe City Golf Course behind Bank of America in Tahoe City. Otherwise, the event is free and starts at noon. Afterwards, head on down to Sunnyside Resort… just a quick jaunt from Tahoe City down Highway 89. Sunnyside features an amazing view of the lake. The luau begins at 4pm, with the buffet starting at 5pm. Sunnyside is a family favorite and this all-you-can-eat event, featuring both cooked and barbequed delights, as well as sashimi and poke, and will run you $32 a head, or $16 for kids. Reservations are recommended.
Don’t miss another free show at the Crystal Bay Club on Friday March 8th showcasing the talent of Polyrhythmics, the funky world-beat band from Seattle.
The Crystal Bay Club is an excellent venue for live music, and if you just so happen to need a hotel for the night, there are affordable cabins for rent behind the Tahoe Biltmore – just across the street. They are even pet-friendly! Reserve your room ahead of time though, especially on busy weekends with free shows.
