Why You’ll Love Spring Skiing and Snowboarding in the Sierras

Why You’ll Love Spring Skiing and Snowboarding in the Sierras

Four weeks have passed since the vernal equinox, also known as astronomical spring. Or if you’re a weather nerd like me (?), you know that we’re already seven weeks into meteorological spring. And this time of year means that the chill of winter has faded like the serpentine arcs of your fresh powder turns from earlier in the season. But this change doesn’t mean that the fun of sliding on snow is over.

palisades-tahoe-spring-skiing-2025-snowpals

Although a few resorts in the Sierras closed this last weekend and a bunch more will end their winter operations today, Easter Sunday, don’t pack away your skis and snowboards just yet. (By the way, info on who’ll still be open past Easter Sunday and until when can be found at the end.) So, whether or not you’ve already been enjoying the spring conditions of our nearby winter playgrounds, here’s why you will love skiing and snowboarding right now!

Fewer Crowds and Warmer Weather

First and foremost, it’s way less crowded in the spring! No lines for the lifts and virtually empty slopes provide a more enjoyable and relaxed experience.

Warmer weather means less layers of clothing, so you’ll be more comfortable without the need to bundle up in bulkier and heavier apparel.

Also, dwindling crowds and clear skies also mean no traffic and no weather delays on the roads!

Deals and Discounts Galore!

During the latter weeks of the season, it’s just so much cheaper! Not only can you find special pricing on lift tickets, but you can also often get reduced rates on lessons and lodging.

For example, you can pre-purchase tickets online to ski or ride at Sugar Bowl for up to 55% off the window price. https://shop.sugarbowl.com/l/lift-tickets/c/sugar-bowl-lift-ticket

In addition to their amazing daily ticket specials, Mount Rose also offers a full-day lift ticket for children plus a slice of pizza and a fountain drink for only $59. https://secure.skirose.com/store/CalendarView.aspx?node_id=1600045

Beginning on Monday, April 21st, adult lift tickets to Palisades Tahoe are only $119 when bought online in advance. https://shop.palisadestahoe.com/s/winter-lift-tickets/day-lift-tickets/c/daylifttickets

Donner Ski Ranch offers a plethora of stellar discounts. With your 2024/2025 season pass to any resort, you get a $25 lift ticket plus up to 4 additional $25 tickets for friends and family. Better still are their two upcoming free lift ticket days! On Sunday, April 27th, anyone in a costume can ski or ride on the house, and on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 11th, all moms get a complimentary lift ticket.

 comp-lift-ticket

At Mammoth Mountain, most midweek adult lift tickets in May are as low as $89. https://book.mammothmountain.com/ecomm/shop/calendar/17793040/en-US/?productcategoryid=117

Learning and Improvement for All Skill Levels

We can’t talk about spring skiing and riding without mentioning corn snow. According to Avalanche.org, corn snow is the surface layer of “snow that has matured through multiple iterations of melt-freeze cycles, most often during the springtime.” And this top layer of softened kernels is smooth and edgeable while the underlying layers deeper into the snowpack remain very supportive.

I’ve often heard spring corn referred to as “hero snow.” And I’d have to agree that it, like fresh powder, can make you feel invincible! For first-timers and beginners, the softer and more forgiving spring snow is easier to learn on. For intermediates on up, corn combined with the space of uncrowded slopes and the superb visibility of sunny skies provide ample opportunity to finetune skills and techniques in carving up the mountain.

Unique Experiences and Fun Vibes

While we relish powder days and storm sessions in winter, we should also welcome these longer days with more sunlight in spring. On Fridays and Saturdays at Mount Rose, for instance, select lifts run until 6pm. https://skirose.com/open-late/ Bluebird skies and a healthy snowpack translate to an overall fun vibe on the mountain. Whether it’s enjoying libations on the sundecks and snow beaches at your favorite mountain or tailgating and grilling up tasty grub in the parking lot, a revived aura of appreciation blossoms as the end of the skiing and riding season approaches.

In the spring, the resorts ratchet up the social experience of our winter sports passion by holding some of the most lively and entertaining events of the year. From live music performances to pond skims, this time of year ushers in an atmosphere of celebration!

And speaking of pond skimming and festive vibes, remember that on Sunday, May 4th, the SnowPals casual meetup will be going down during the 33rd Annual Cushing Crossing at Palisades Tahoe. Extend Your Season

As you can see, spring skiing and snowboarding offer a unique blend of fun, relaxation and adventure, making it an affordable and worthwhile experience for skiers and riders of all levels.

And for those with Ikon, Epic, and other passes, take advantage of the opportunities for an endless winter by traveling to the resorts in the Southern Hemisphere available with your season pass! The winter season in locales such as Chile, Australia and New Zealand typically runs from June to October.

Guest Author’s Profile

Cliff Lastrella is a longtime SnowPals member since the early days when the listserv was on Yahoo Groups as Bay Area Skiers & Snowboarders (BASS). An advanced snowboarder from Vallejo, he frequents both the Alpine Meadows and Olympic Valley sides with his Palisades Tahoe resorts only pass as well as Bear Valley with his Cali Pass, which also allows him a few days a season at Sierra-at-Tahoe via its Powder Alliance membership. Bay Area born and bred, Cliff has been snowboarding since Spring 1997, though he has skied once in his life while still in high school back when an aforementioned resort was still called Sierra Ski Ranch. He doesn’t really have an off-season fix, but year-round, he routinely strength trains and walks/hikes to stay in shape. And on occasion, Cliff also shreds some very mellow hills in his neighborhood on his ancient Freebord (think snowboarding on the street). He considers himself a novice Freeborder, as he’s nowhere close to the amazing skill level seen in this brief YouTube video: Freebord Explained

Film Production Company: Warren Miller Entertainment

WARREN MILLER FILM TOUR

Narrated by Jonny Moseley, ALL TIME will feature deep dives into elements that Warren himself first identified as the stuff of which snowy dreams are made.

From the birth of ski towns like Sun Valley and Aspen; to the icons and innovators—like the original hotdoggers—the film will spin through the years like snow ghosts, bringing humor and inspiration from today including Maine’s finest athlete, Donny Pelletier, to the park scene at Woodward Park City and the next gen of skiers and riders.

Less a documentary than a love letter, it’s a way to honor how, where, and with whom we’ve made ski and snowboard movies since Warren first picked up a camera in 1949.

This is not a trip down memory lane; it’s an exploration of how snow sports have burrowed into our collective consciousness as an obsession and a way of life.

Warren Miller ski and snowboard films have served as the annual start to winter for skiers and snowboarders across the globe for nearly 75 years and is a party that can’t be contained by a single film or even a single year.”

The Land of Giants (2023)

“If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” -Isaac Newton

The story of man vs. mountain is one that has captured our imaginations for centuries. But what if MSP flipped the script? What if, instead of focusing on the human element, we took a closer look at the mountains themselves?

That’s the premise of The Land of Giants, a new ski film that explores the most iconic mountains on Earth. From the Fjords of Norway to the spines of Alaska, we will get to know and understand the canvas that creates the most mind-melting moments in skiing. But most importantly, we’ll come to appreciate their sheer beauty and power. Captured with revolutionary cinematography combined with genre bending music, The Land of Giants is not to be missed.

The Land of Giants features the best skiers in the world, skiing unbelievable conditions and riding to the very edge and beyond. It’s a celebration of the natural world, and a reminder of the power of the human spirit. It’s a film that will leave you awestruck, inspired, and humbled.

Video of 2019-20 New gondola connecting Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows ski resorts

squaw-alpine-improvements-2019-2020

$17 Million of New Investment Planned for 2019-20 Season at Squaw Valley | Alpine Meadows

Video credit: DAVID CARACCIO of The Sacramento Bee, JULY 26, 2019

“Placer County supervisors have approved a gondola, dubbed the California Express Gondola, between Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows resorts in the Lake Tahoe, California, area so skiers and snowboarders won’t have to leave the snow and drive or take shuttle to access the two mountains.” – Sacbee.com

According to Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows, the gondola would extend from the base of Red Dog chair at Squaw Valley to the base area of Alpine Meadows. The gondola will have 33 towers spanning 11,700 feet, about 2.2 miles.

Lift capacity would approximately be 1,400 people per hour in both directions. From base to base, the trip would take 13 to 16 minutes.

Press release MARCH 4, 2019 from Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows:

• At Alpine Meadows, a new $10 million high-speed lift will replace Hot Wheels, connecting the Alpine Meadows Base Lodge to Sherwood
• At Squaw Valley, improvements to the area around High Camp will increase connectivity with High Camp facilities and enhance the beginner experience

[Olympic Valley, Calif.] March 4, 2019 – Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows and Alterra Mountain Company have announced over $17 million of capital investment in the resort for the 2019-20 season, including a new $10 million chairlift at Alpine Meadows. Following the first full season of operations on the Ikon Pass, Alterra Mountain Company plans to invest $181 million in capital improvements across its 14 North American mountain destinations for the upcoming year. These capital projects are part of an ambitious improvement plan totaling more than half a billion dollars through the 2022-23 season, focused on elevating the guest experience at all destinations, after an initial $170 million investment for the 2018-19 season. At Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows, improvements focus on guest access to amenities and terrain for all ability levels.

New detachable high-speed chairlift at Alpine Meadows

“Alpine Meadows will see continued investment following last year’s $1.4 million renovation of its Base Lodge. A new high-speed detachable quad chairlift will replace the existing Hot Wheels triple chair, adding a mid-station at the current terminus and a 1,300-foot extension up to Sherwood Cliffs ridge, landing between Art’s Knob and the top terminal of Sherwood Express. A total ride time of about five minutes will give skiers and riders direct access from the base area to both the Alpine and Sherwood sides of the ski area. The new express chairlift will be a four-minute ride from the Alpine Meadows base area to the mid-station, providing convenient access to some of the area’s best low-intermediate terrain. At the top terminal, just one-minute’s ride from the mid-station, guests will have immediate access to the Sherwood Cliffs, Art’s Knob and all of the terrain served by Sherwood Express, which boasts the closest view of Lake Tahoe anywhere in the resort. Here, intermediate and expert guests can experience one of the mountain’s most spectacular areas, with wide open glades and access to the secluded Ice Bar, an on-snow hangout that comes alive for spring skiing.

“The new lift will benefit the Alpine Meadows experience on many levels,” said Ron Cohen, president and chief operating officer at Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows. “Terrain currently served by Hot Wheels is frequently used by learners and ski and ride school as the next progression after the beginner terrain in the base area. A detachable lift will make loading and unloading much easier for these groups, and the ride time will be more than cut in half. Alpine Meadows is a fantastic place to learn how to ski, and I am proud that we are continuing to foster that quality. In addition to those clear benefits, the new lift extension will directly connect guests to some of Alpine’s best intermediate and expert terrain.

The lift’s location is favorable in high winds and inclement weather,” Cohen continued, “and the extension creates access to the Sherwood area without the need for the current multi-step process that requires a long and sometimes nearly impassable traverse.”

New surface lifts and terrain enhancements at Squaw Valley

“Squaw Valley will also see improvements to on-hill connectivity with new surface lifts in the High Camp area. A new rope tow will create fast and convenient access to High Camp, avoiding the need to traverse uphill to get to the High Camp facilities. At 8,200 feet, the recently renovated High Camp is home to multiple dining locations, the High Camp Pool & Hot Tub and a 30-acre beginner area, all with panoramic views of Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada. High Camp’s extensive beginner terrain will be further enhanced for 2019-20 with infrastructure improvements, including a new “magic carpet” surface lift, snow fencing, and other skier experience enhancements that will help novices and Ski & Snowboard School students to fully utilize the terrain with less interference from other skier traffic. Construction will begin this summer, as soon as conditions allow.”

“$17 million in capital improvements by Alterra Mountain Company represents a strong commitment to continue to invest in Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows, optimizing our infrastructure in a way that provides great access for everyone, whether you are a seasoned veteran or a first-time visitor,” said Cohen. “This big investment at Alpine Meadows shows an enduring focus on the family-friendly atmosphere, great snow conditions and incredible terrain that make Alpine one of Tahoe’s favorite resorts. We are coming into the second half of what has proven to be an incredible season so far, and with these changes on the plate, the outlook for 2019-20 is wildly optimistic.” – SquawAlpine.com

A combination of variety, flexibility and affordability gives the Tahoe Six-Pack lift ticket deal the best bargain you can buy; here’s why, you get..

1) a variety of mountains/terrains at seven Tahoe resorts so you won’t get bored

2) flexibility: the Six-Pack lift tickets are valid throughout the 2016-17 season (the following holiday blackout dates apply: February 18-19, 2017) and do not have to be used on consecutive days. Given Lake Tahoe’s typically long winter season, this means ticket holders can use one lift ticket as early as November and another as late as the month of April. The lift tickets are also fully transferable to family and friends.

3) affordability/savings: the Tahoe Six-Pack costs $488.95 per adult 6 pack lift tickets; your per lift ticket cost breaks down to $81.50. You save up to $68.50 off regular lift ticket pricing; for example buying a lift ticket at Squaw’s ticket window will cost you $150 while buying the Six-Pack gets you the same lift ticket for $81.50 as part of the promo package deal.
